How strong must be four muscles to avoid knee pain?

Everyone says that to build the muscles of the yard to to avoid knee pain, but how strong is strong? Is there a guide, for example, body weight versus how much can be left on an extension of four?

How strong, right? As strong as needed to avoid pain. I would stay out of the extensions of four and go with the press machine leg. But what I know, I've only had three knee operations and hundreds of hours of physical therapy. By the way, my knees do not hurt ever!
